Pinnacle Forest Fire Impact on Table Rock Reservoir

The Pinnacle Mountain Fire started on Pinnacle Mountain in Pickens, South Carolina in mid-November, 2016, and spread across 10,000 acres of land until it was extinguished in mid-December, 2016.  Our objective for this work is to determine the impact of this extensive forest on the water quality of the nearby Table Rock reservoir, as assessed by microbial community analysis.  High-throughput sequencing is being used to analyze the microbial diversity of water samples collected from several sites at the reservoir. This research will also produce a better understanding of the effects of prolonged fire on microbial communities in nearby waters, which can be applied in future restoration efforts.
